VPN requirement
You will need to connect to the VPN if you are off-campus, using a minimally managed device, or using a personal device.
Instructions
- Connect to the VPN if you are off-campus, using a minimally managed device, or using a personal device.
- Launch Microsoft Remote Desktop. Search for and open Remote Desktop Connection from the Start Menu
- Enter the full computer name in the Computer field.
- Remote Windows server: remote.mtu.edu
- Fully managed: computername.ad.mtu.edu
- Minimally managed: computername.sabu.mtu.edu
- On a Windows system, select More Choices first, then Use a different account.
- Enter the account name in the User name field.
- Remote Windows server or fully managed: MTU\accountname
- Minimally managed: Contact your group for assistance with the accountname to use. You will likely need to use the following format:
.\accountname (making sure to put .\ in front of the local username that you use to log in to that machine, then use the local password you use for that machine, not your Michigan Tech account name (SSO).)
- Select Connect.
- You may receive a warning that “The identity of the remote computer cannot be verified” Select Yes.
- Connection is now complete.
Remote Windows Server (remote.mtu.edu)
The remote server (remote.mtu.edu) allows you to log onto a server and access a limited number of on-campus applications. Due to limitations, only certain software is available for use and is listed below.

Printing on remote.mtu.edu
You will be able to print to the HuskyPrint stations and to an Adobe PDF on remote.mtu.edu. You can add departmental printers for your current session, but the printers will default to HuskyPrint and Adobe PDF once you log off of the system.
You will not be able to print from remote.mtu.edu to a printer locally installed on your computer. You could print to the Adobe PDF printer, then transfer the PDF file to your local computer, then print to your locally-installed printer.
