Remote Desktop Connection (Linux)

If temporary access to a Windows machine is needed on Linux due to application compatibility, file access, or other reasons, you can remotely connect to a Windows computer which has remote desktop sharing enabled.

Michigan Tech IT has a general-use remote Windows terminal server (remote.mtu.edu) available that hosts a limited number of applications for use while you are away from campus (See the Connecting to Windows article for a list of applications available on remote.mtu.edu).

To remote desktop to a Windows computer from a Linux computer, make sure:

  1. If you are not connecting from a Fully Managed machine, you will need to establish a VPN connection.
    1. See the Managed devices at Michigan Tech article to learn about Fully Managed systems vs other types.
    2. See the Connecting to VPN (Linux) article for information on VPN connections on Linux.
