Connecting to a campus Windows computer (Windows)

You can connect to the remote Windows server (remote.mtu.edu) to access selected campus software or to a private office or lab computer to which you have remote access. Visit the Related Articles section for how to connect from devices running macOS or Linux.

VPN requirement

You will need to connect to the VPN if you are off-campus, using a minimally managed device, or using a personal device.

Instructions

  1. Launch Microsoft Remote Desktop. Search for and open Remote Desktop Connection from the Start Menu
  2. Enter the full computer name in the Computer field.
    • Remote Windows server: remote.mtu.edu
    • Fully managed: computername.ad.mtu.edu
    • Minimally managed: computername.sabu.mtu.edu
      computername.ad.mtu.edu 
  3. On a Windows system, select More Choices first, then Use a different account.
  4. Enter the account name in the User name field.
    • Remote Windows server or fully managed: MTU\accountname
    • Minimally managed: Contact your group for assistance with the accountname to use
  5. Select Connect.
  6. You may receive a warning that “The identity of the remote computer cannot be verified” Select Yes. 
  7. Connection is now complete.
    • Enter your credentials: MTU\accountname

Remote Windows Server (remote.mtu.edu)

The remote server (remote.mtu.edu) allows you to log onto a server and access a limited number of on-campus applications. Due to limitations, only certain software is available for use and is listed below.
