Remote access to office or private lab computers

Before you begin

VPN connection is required, if off-campus or off-domain.

You will need to enter the following for the username field: MTU\accountname

Requesting remote access

Faculty, staff, and students can request remote access for their office or private lab desktops by contacting Michigan Tech IT. To gain remote access to your office or private lab computer, note the name of your computer using the Find your computer name support article and email IT at it-help@mtu.edu or call 906-487-1111. 

Refer to remote access to lab computers for instructions for accessing IT-provided computer labs.

Remote access steps

  1. Connect to the VPN for Mac and Windows or Linux.
  2. Launch Microsoft Remote Desktop
    Windows: Search for and open Remote Desktop Connection from the Start Menu
    enter Remote Desktop Connection in the search field
    Mac: Launch Microsoft Remote Desktop in Finder > Go > Applications. You can install Microsoft Remote Desktop from the App Store, if needed.
     
  3. Enter the full computer name of the computer you're trying to connect to. You can find the Full Computer Name under Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings. Example: computername.ad.mtu.edu or computername.sabu.mtu.edu. More information is our support article:  Find your computer name. 
  4. For the MTU domain, the account name must be entered in the format: mtu\account name
    Enter MTU domain credentials
  5. Select Connect.
  6. You may receive a warning that “The identity of the remote computer cannot be verified” Select Yes. 
  7. Connection is now complete.
