Adding your Michigan Tech email account to Thunderbird, Mac Mail, or other email programs

You can configure an email program such as Thunderbird, Apple Mail, or other email programs, to send and receive your Michigan Tech email.

Verify that IMAP is enabled

You can find the basic settings (IMAP and SMTP settings) for your email program located in Google's support article, Check Gmail through other email platforms.

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. In the top right, click Settings settings and then See all settings.
  3. Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
  4. In the IMAP access section, select Enable IMAP.
  5. Click Save Changes.

Check if Google 2-Step Verification is on or off

Check to see if you have Google 2-Step Verification enabled. If you do, you will need to set up an App password for email applications that you use other than the Gmail Web site or Gmail app. If you do not, you will need to allow less secure apps.

  1. Visit the Gmail Security settings page
  2. Check if the 2-Step Verfication setting in the Signing in to Google section is set to Off or On

Incoming mail (IMAP) server

  • imap.gmail.com
  • Requires SSL: Yes
  • Port: 993

Outgoing mail (SMTP) server

  • smtp.gmail.com
  • Requires SSL: Yes
  • Requires TLS: Yes (if available)
  • Requires Authentication: yes
  • Port for SSL: 465
  • Port for TLS/STARTTLS: 587

Full name or display name

  • Your Name

Account name, user name, or email address

  • Your Michigan Tech email address

Password

  • Your Michigan Tech password

Thunderbird

Add your Michigan Tech email account

  1. Open Thunderbird
  2. Select File > New > Existing Mail Account...
  3. Enter your name, Michigan Tech email address, and Michigan Tech password
  4. Thunderbird will automatically configure your Gmail connection
  5. Select Done

Update Thunderbird settings

  1. Open Thunderbird
  2. Right-click on your Michigan Tech email account
  3. Select Settings

  5. Update the IMAP settings
  6. Select OK

Apple Mail

  1. Open Mail
  2. Choose Mail --> Add Account or choose Google if this is the first time you are using Mail
  3. Enter your Michigan Tech email account details when prompted
  4. Mail will automatically configure your email settings

  1. Open Mail
  2. Choose Mail --> Preferences --> Accounts --> Server Settings
  3. Update the IMAP and SMTP settings
