Find Michigan Tech directory information using an email client

You can use an email client to find information from the Campus Directory

Starting July 7, 2020, authentication is required to access campus directory information off-campus using an email client. You can use the following settings to set up your email client.

  • Name: MTU
  • Hostname: ldap.mtu.edu
  • Base DN: ou=people,dc=mtu,dc=edu
  • Port number: 636
  • Bind DN: uid=<yourusername>,ou=people,dc=mtu,dc=edu
    Replace <yourusername> with your Michigan Tech account name. Example: uid=blizzard,ou=people,dc=mtu,dc=edu
  • Select Use secure connection (SSL)

Thunderbird

  1. Open Thunderbird.
  2. Select Mail Toolbar then Options. Alternatively, you can select Tools, then Options from your Menu Bar.

    Note: Right-click on the empty space near the top of Thunderbird to enable your Menu Bar or Mail Toolbar.

  3. Select Options.

  4. Select the Pencil icon in the sidebar.
  5. Select the Addressing tab.
  6. Select Directory Server.
  7. Select Edit Directories.

  8. Select Edit if you have an existing LDAP Directory Server listed. Select Add to add a directory server.
  9. Enter the LDAP information:
    • Name: MTU
    • Hostname: ldap.mtu.edu
    • Base DN: ou=people,dc=mtu,dc=edu
    • Port number: 636
    • Bind DN: uid=<yourusername>,ou=people,dc=mtu,dc=edu
      Replace <yourusername> with your Michigan Tech account name. Example: uid=blizzard,ou=people,dc=mtu,dc=edu
    • Select Use secure connection (SSL)

  10. Select OK to apply the change.
  11. The next time you go to compose an email, and you use the directory server, you will be prompted to enter your Michigan Tech password.
