Body
You can configure an email program such as Thunderbird, Apple Mail, or other email programs, to send and receive your Michigan Tech email.
Due to increased security requirements necessary to protect your account:
- Verify that you have the latest version of your email program installed.
- Email programs will need to be able to support the "OAuth2" protocol.
- Outlook is no longer supported.
- We no longer support older email programs such as Pine, Alpine, Eudora, or older versions of Thunderbird, Outlook, or Apple Mail. These older versions rely on outdated security that has been compromised by hackers.
- The versions of mail programs we support include:

Update Thunderbird settings
You should not need to change any settings. If you are having trouble getting your mail, the simplest solution is to remove your account and create it again as above or try the following instructions for setting OAuth2 authentication.
Setting OAuth2 authentication in Thunderbird
- Open Thunderbird. In the top right navigation menu (also known as the "hamburger menu") select Account Settings.
- Under your @mtu.edu account, select Server Settings. Change "Authentication Method" to "OAuth2". At any point after this step you may get a webpage asking you to enter your MTU account name and password, followed by Duo authentication.
- Select the @mtu.edu account itself to pull up "Account Settings". Note at bottom which Outgoing Server (SMTP) it is using.
- At the bottom left select Outgoing Server (SMTP). This brings up the list of your outgoing email servers. Choose "smtp.gmail.com".
- Select Edit. Change Authentication Method to "OAuth2". Select OK.
