MichiganTechOpen

Michigan Tech students, staff, and faculty should use MichiganTechOpen for other wireless devices (e.g. TVs, gaming consoles, smart home devices, etc.).

Connecting to MichiganTechOpen

To connect to MichiganTechOpen, you will need to pre-register each device in ClearPass.

Wireless devices such as Smart TV's, gaming consoles  (XBOX, PlayStation, Nintendo, etc.), wireless printers, and devices that are not running Windows, Mac OS, or Linux, that may not understand advanced network authentication, need to be pre-registered before connecting them to the MichiganTechOpen network. Any devices you'd like to use to connect with them must also be registered in ClearPass and connected to MichiganTechOpen.

  1. Log in to ClearPass with your Michigan Tech account name and password from another device that already has Internet access, not the one you are registering in ClearPass.
  2. Complete the registration process, paying attention to any special instructions listed at Registering a device with ClearPass
  3. Connect the device to MichiganTechOpen.

MichiganTechGuest

Guests, such as parents or community members, will need to connect to MichiganTechGuest.

Guest wireless is available on all Michigan Tech wireless access points. This service is available to unregistered individuals/devices.  This means that if your device is already associated with your account on the eduroam wireless, the device will be unable to join the guest network.

If you are a Michigan Tech student or employee, you should not be connecting to MichiganTechGuest. If you have connected to MichiganTechGuest, you will need to forget/remove all Michigan Tech wireless networks from your list, then restart your device, in order to reconnect to a Michigan Tech network for students, staff, and faculty.

Connecting to MichiganTechGuest

To connect to MichiganTechGuest, you will need an SSL-capable browser and a WiFi certified 802.11b/g/n/ac wireless card for your laptop or mobile device and be within the MichiganTechGuest wireless coverage area.

  1. From the list of available networks on your device, choose the MichiganTechGuest wireless SSID.
  2. After connecting, proceed to a web browser, and read and accept the Terms of Service Agreement to be connected to the network.
