Campus computing device requirement and loaners

Beginning with the Fall 2020 semester, all students are required to have a computing device. This will help maximize your success in a range of class scenarios during your college career.

This requirement means that all students, in the classroom and remote, can fully participate in mixed-mode classes (taught through a combination of in-person and remote instruction), as well as in remote assessment. It will also ensure that students will have access to the technology they need to be successful while maintaining the physical distancing necessary due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students living off-campus are strongly encouraged to have regular and reliable Internet access.

Please refer to the Computing Device Requirement page for more information and answers to frequently asked questions. For additional help, contact IT at 906-487-1111 or email it-help@mtu.edu.

What models do you recommend?

Please refer to the Computing Device Requirement page for specifications. We do not recommend any particular model; however, we have a laptop catalog that you can use as a guide for economy, standard, performance, and ultrabook examples that we use for university departments.

What do I do if my device breaks? Are loaner laptops or devices available?

Short-term loaner devices will be available at no cost to students who experience a device malfunction that requires repair. Laptops or other computing devices are not available to borrow for the entire semester. You should plan to arrive at Michigan Tech with a device that meets the required specifications. Please visit the J. Robert Van Pelt and John and Ruanne Opie Library front desk for an available short-term loaner laptop and bring your HuskyCard.
