Connecting to M: multidrive (Mac - minimally managed or personal)

This article explains how to connect to the M: multidrive from a minimally managed or personal device running macOS.

VPN connection required

The following steps require you to first make a connection to the campus VPN. (VPN instructions for Mac). Your Multidrive will only function while connected to the Internet with a working secure VPN connection.  If you disconnect from the Internet or wake your device from sleep, you will likely have to reconnect the VPN first before being able to access the Multidrive.

Folder names

  • mtucifs_home is your H: drive on campus computers.
  • my_web_files is your pages.mtu.edu /~username web home.
  • Any other network shares available to you will also be listed in your multidrive.

Instructions

Use the Multidrive package

  1. Connect to the VPN.
  2. Install the Multidrive application. (Download link: Multidrive.pkg) You may have to right-click on the downloaded package file and choose Open for it to begin the installation process.
  3. Open the installed Multidrive app from the Applications folder.
  4. A window will ask for your Michigan Tech account name. Enter your Michigan Tech account name, e.g., for the email address blizzard@mtu.edu, you would enter blizzard.
  5. A message will confirm that "You are attempting to connect to the server multidrive.mtu.edu." Select Connect to continue.
  6. In the window that follows, you should see the name field populated with your account name, preceded with "MTU\". Enter your Michigan Tech password and select Connect.
  7. Your M: multidrive will open in a new window.

Use Go > Connect to Server

After connecting to the VPN, you can also manually connect to your home directory or multidrive share by using the instructions.

  1. In the Finder on your Mac, choose Go > Connect to Server.
  2. In the Server Address field, enter:
    • For the M: drive or Multidrive share path, use smb://mtu;username@multidrive.mtu.edu/multidrive/sharename
    • For the H: drive or Home directory path, use smb://mtu;username@homes.mtu.edu/home
  3. Click Connect.
  4. Enter MTU\accountname and your Michigan Tech password when prompted for your credentials (Registered User).
  5. To make it easier to connect to the computer in the future, select Remember this password in my keychain to add your user name and password for the computer to your keychain.
