Michigan Tech IT monitors compliance for updates and security through IT management systems.
Minimally managed devices connected to our Azure management system are expected to periodically connect to the network and remain compliant with patching standards, including receiving software updates through the company portal, where core applications are configured to update automatically. Devices with outdated patches will be removed from the network until they are updated and compliant.
Normally, devices connected to the Internet will update themselves with no manual intervention. However, some devices left off the network for a while may require a manual sync.
Updates and Patching - Company Portal Manual Sync
Our Azure management system automatically manages device check-ins and core application updates through the Company Portal whenever a device is connected to the network. These happen automatically on 8-hour cycles. However, depending on device usage, patching and device status may fall behind. To ensure successful synchronization and update deployment, we recommend keeping devices powered on and connected to the network for at least 24 hours to allow them to attempt to re-sync. If automatic check-in has failed or if you would like to attempt to sync and patch manually, the statuses and sync option can both be checked by doing the following:
- Open Company Portal. In Windows search, type “Company Portal.”
- Select Settings.
- In the bottom left, select the cog wheel icon.
- Select the Sync button. This will perform a sync with our tenant so that your device receives the proper policies and security updates.

Updates and Patching - Windows Updates
- Select the Start button (Windows icon) in the bottom-left corner.
- Right-click the Windows icon at the bottom, and select Settings, or type in “Settings” in the Windows search.
- In Settings, select Windows Update; this is usually located at the bottom of the left sidebar.
- Select Check for updates. Windows will search for available updates automatically.
- If updates are available, select Download & install or Restart now if prompted. Be sure to keep your computer plugged in during large updates.

If you have any issues with syncing, please email IT or call 906-487-1111.
