Using Niagra Building Controls

Facilities building mechanics use the Niagra Building Controls system. Your Facilities supervisor will need to submit a request to it-help@mtu.edu for access to the building controls system. Keweenaw Automation will provide the IP address(es) and your account log in information. You will need to use the Microsoft Edge browser.

You will need to make sure that Java is configured, which is generally a one-time setup, but you will need to configure Edge every 30 days as Niagra is outdated software.

Configure Java

This generally only needs to be done once on your account, but you may need to check the setting in the future.

  1. Verify with your Facilities supervisor that you have been granted access to the building system.
  2. Launch the Big-IP Edge client from the Windows Start Menu.
  3. Log in to the VPN using the Big-IP Edge Client.
  4. Launch Configure Java from the Windows Start Menu.
  5. Select the Security tab.
  6. Select Edit Site List under Exception Site List.
  7. Select Add.
  8. Enter the IP address provided to you by Keweenaw Automation in the format http://10.x.xx.xxx. Replace the x's with the numbers provided.
  9. Select OK.
  10. Repeat the process to add another IP address, if needed.
  11. Select OK
    Edit Site List... Add http://10.x.xx.xxx

Configure Microsoft Edge every 30 days

This will need to be reconfigured every 30 days, as the Niagra software is outdated and needs to be allowed in Edge in order to work.

  1. Launch Microsoft Edge from the Windows Start Menu.
  2. Visit edge://settings/defaultBrowser
  3. Select Allow under Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode (IE mode).
  4. Select Add under Internet Explorer mode pages.
  5. Enter the IP address provided to you by Keweenaw Automation in the format http://10.x.xx.xxx. Replace the x's with the numbers provided.
    Add a page. Enter a URL:
  6. Select Add. You will need to repeat this every 30 days.
  7. Repeat the process to add another IP address, if needed.
  8. Select the three dots in the upper right corner of your browser window.
  9. Select Reload in Internet Explorer Mode. If that is not available to select, choose Close Edge.

Log in to Niagra Building Controls

Old system

Use Edge.

  1. Visit the IP address or Web site URL of the old Niagra system.
  2. Select To sign in with Java Web Start, please click here.
  3. It will prompt you to download and save a .jnlp file.
  4. Find the .jnlp file in your download location.
  5. Select Open on the the .jnlp file you downloaded.
  6. Log in using the account name and password provided to you by Keweenaw Automation.

New system

Use Edge, but for part of it, use Firefox. Contact Dave Krings - dwkrings@mtu.edu in Facilities for help as to which parts to use Firefox and which parts to use Edge..

  1. Visit the IP address or Web site URL of the new Niagra system.
  2. Enter your account name provided to you by Keweenaw Automation in the Username field.
  3. Log in using the account name and password provided to you by Keweenaw Automation.
