Instructor guidance to prepare for Canvas-based assessments

A properly-authored Canvas quiz can provide a robust method for assessing student learning while helping support academic integrity.  The following best practices can help to ensure that student laptops/browsers are ready to participate in Canvas quizzes.  This guidance is intended for instructors who are not requiring the use of Respondus LockDown Browser to access their Canvas quiz.

Web browser recommendations for students (please share with your students):

  • Ensure your browser is up to date.  Canvas supports the current or first previous major release of common browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari).  Review this Canvas guide to confirm you are using a supported browser.
  • Before opening your Canvas exam log out and then log back in to Canvas.  Alternatively, you may also use an incognito/private browser window to take the exam.
  • Ensure that you do not have Banweb active in another browser tab/window as these systems could log you out of Canvas if left idle in the background.

Instructors are also encouraged to create and assign a short practice quiz in Canvas (before the first scheduled assessment) to help students confirm that their computing devices are ready for Canvas quizzes.
