LastPass - account setup and renewal information

What is LastPass?

LastPass Premium accounts are now available for Michigan Tech faculty, staff and students. LastPass provides you the ability to manage all your account login information for the sites you visit every day. With LastPass, you set up a master password that gives you access to all of your other accounts' secure login information. 

Setting up your LastPass account

1. Go to the Michigan Tech LastPass webpage. Enter your Michigan Tech email address and select Submit to receive a premium sign-up link.
2. Follow the link in the email you receive. This will take you to Michigan Tech’s LastPass Premium sign up page.
3. Enter any email address you prefer to use with your LastPass Premium account.
4. Create a master password and select the Sign-up button.
5. LastPass works most efficiently when you add the LastPass extension to your web browser. We encourage you to download the appropriate extensions for your preferred browser:
   • Chrome
   • Safari
   • Microsoft Edge
   • Firefox

Renewing your LastPass Premium account

LastPass Premium accounts through Michigan Tech must be renewed annually. They are valid for a year from the date on which you sign up. 

Renewal instructions

1. When your premium subscription expires, visit https://lastpass.com/partnerpremium/mtu and sign up again. If you are using the @mtu.edu address for your Premium subscription, enter that email address in both fields.
2. Due to how the subscription works, you cannot pre-emptively extend your subscription before it expires.  The credit can only be applied to a "LastPass Free" account,  so you must let your premium subscription expire before rewning. This will have no impact on the passwords you have in our account, but it will limit you to a single device for access until the premium subscription has been activated.

Master password

The master password is the most important password to remember. You use your master password along with your email address to access your password vault. The vault is where all of your individual site log-ins are stored. 

The master password must meet the following criteria:

• Be at least 12 characters long
• Contain at least 1 number
• Contain at least 1 lowercase letter
• Contain at least 1 uppercase letter
• Must not include your email address

Vault

The LastPass Vault is a page that allows you to see all of your saved data. It is a locally-hosted file so it is secure and fast.
