Download Zotero installer

The Zotero installer is available for download at the Zotero website.

Decompress the file

  1. Locate the downloaded Zotero installer file (compressed .tar file).
  2. If you downloaded the file via the website, move the Zotero.x.x.x.x_linux-x86_64.tar.bz2 file from your Downloads folder to your home directory.
Note that the x’s in the file name represent the version number, and will need to be changed, depending on which version of Zotero you are installing.
  3. Decompress the file with the following command: tar -xvf ~/Downloads/Zotero-x.x.x.x_linux-x86_64.tar.bz2

Run the launcher

  1. After unpacking, cd into the new directory: cd ~/Zotero_linux-x86_64
  2. Run the launcher: ./zotero
  3. Follow the GUI for the installer and accept the default settings. You can make custom setting changes if desired.
  4. After the GUI installer runs, your default browser should launch and direct to a site giving you the option to install the Zotero browser extension. If it does not automatically launch, visit the Zotero download site to add the extension.

Post Installation

After performing the installation and browser extension, select the program icon to perform configuration options for library syncing.
