Duo app - installation and activation

Tags duo

We recommend installing Duo's smartphone app to your device. It's easy to use and also functions as a built-in security code generator so you can log in even if you don't have cell service or WiFi at the time. You can also install and activate the Duo app on a second device, such as a tablet or another smartphone, as a backup, in case your primary phone is lost, stolen, or broken.

Using the app

Press a button on your smartphone via the Duo Mobile app (recommended). A push notification is sent to your phone; you then review the request and tap Approve to authenticate. You must have Internet or cellular service for this option. The first time you log into a Duo-protected service, you will be required to verify your identity from your chosen device. After this, you can choose the Remember Me option. Duo will remember the device for a predetermined amount of time (30 days for Banweb) so you don't have to verify your identity every time you log in. Verification options Duo can verify your identity in the following ways.

  • Duo push (recommended): Press a button on your smartphone via the Duo Mobile app. A push notification is sent to your phone; you then review the request and tap Approve to authenticate. You must have Internet or cellular service for this option.
  • Duo passcode: Launch the Duo mobile app to generate an authentication code. You do not need Internet or cellular service for this option.
  • Phone call: You will receive an automated phone call and be prompted to press a key on your phone to authenticate. The call will come from 906-487-1111.
  • USB hardware key: Press a button on a U2F token such as a USB hardware key or Yubikey. You will need to have a USB port on your computer to use it.
  • PIN generator or Duo token: Use a token generator to generate a security code (good option for those without a phone). The Duo token generates a PIN that can be used for verification. These are available at the Technical Assistance Center (TAC) during regular university business hours. Note that the Duo app also includes the PIN generator function.
  • SMS text message: You will receive an authentication code by text message.

How do I reactivate the Duo mobile app?

If you need to reactivate the Duo app, e.g., you bought a new phone but kept your old phone number, follow Duo's instructions for reactivating Duo mobile.
