Activating the Duo app on a new device or phone number

We recommend that you install and activate the Duo mobile app on your smartphone or tablet and have multiple phone numbers or devices registered.

You will need to be able to use a device that is already registered with Duo in order to add a device at Michigan Tech Two Factor Authentication registration page

New device with existing phone number

If you changed devices but kept your phone number previously registered with Duo, you are able to reauthorize a new device by visiting the Two-Step Authorization Registration page and selecting Add a New Device in the menu. From there, follow the prompts to reauthorize your account to work with your new phone.

  1. Visit the Michigan Tech Two Factor Authentication registration page.
  2. Select Add a new device.

  3. Choose an authentication method and complete two-factor authentication to begin adding your new device.
    Note: You can't add a new device from this page if you do not have access to any of your previously enrolled authentication devices. Contact it-help@mtu.edu or call (906) 487-1111 for assistance.

  4. Proceed with the device enrollment process as shown in the initial Enrollment Guide. As an example, let's add another phone.Select Device Type
  5. Enter and confirm the second phone's number.

  6. Select the new phone's operating system.

  7. Install Duo Mobile on your new device.
    Apple iOS devices
    Installing Duo Mobile on Apple iOS. Visit the App Store on your device and choose the Duo mobile app.

    Android devices
    Installing Duo Mobile on Android. Visit Google Play on your device and choose the Duo mobile app.

  8. Scan the barcode with your device to activate or you can choose Email me an activation link instead.

  9. The new phone is added and listed with your other enrolled devices. You can click Add another device to start the enrollment process again and add another authenticator.New Device Added
    You can also send in a request to IT to send you SMS messages with the DUO mobile app link and registration code for your device. Please note that the link will expire in 24 hours. Please include the platform of the new device, such as iPhone or Android. Email us at it-help@mtu.edu or call (906) 487-1111 during university business hours for assistance.

You will need to be able to use a device that is already registered with Duo in order to add a device at Michigan Tech Two Factor Authentication registration page

Please note: If you do not have access to a device with a phone number already registered, IT will need to verify your identity in-person at the Technical Assistance Center or over a videoconference due to the secure nature of Duo. We will not be able to enter a new phone number for you until we are able to identify you with these methods. 

You can either stop by the Technical Assistance Center or call us at 906-487-1111 during university business hours to start a videoconference, Monday through Friday, 8a-5p EST.
