Updating the default Canvas grading scheme

In order to accurately provide grade information in Canvas, a grading scheme is required.  All Canvas course shells include a default scheme that validates Michigan Tech’s grading system

Follow the steps below to align the default Canvas course grading scheme with your syllabus:

  1. From Settings, scroll to the Grading Scheme section of the Course Details tab to access the default scheme.

  2. Click View to review the default grading scheme and identify changes needed.

  3. To align the scheme to your course syllabus create a new version of the scheme using the Copy
    option.

  4. Confirm you want to make a duplicate of the scheme.
  5. Enter a unique name for the grading scheme in the name field.
  6. Adjust the percentage ranges for each letter grade to align with your syllabus.
  7. Click Save to complete the new scheme.

  8. Confirm that the new grading scheme is visible from the drop down menu.

  9. Click the blue Update Course Details button at the bottom of the page.

  10. The new grading scheme will be used to assign letters grades in the total column of the course grade book.
